Vedic Astrology Yogas

Sunapha & Anapha Yoga
Lunar Wealth Combinations

Sunapha and Anapha are two of the most fundamental Moon-based yogas in Jyotish — formed by planets in the signs immediately adjacent to the Moon, they indicate the overall support and prosperity available to the native.

What are Sunapha and Anapha Yogas?

Sunapha Yoga is formed when one or more planets (other than the Sun, Rahu, or Ketu) occupy the 2nd house from the Moon. Anapha Yoga is formed when one or more planets occupy the 12th house from the Moon. Both yogas indicate positive circumstances — the Moon supported by planets on either side tends to express its best qualities and attract favorable conditions.

Why the Moon?

In Jyotish, the Moon is the primary indicator of the mind, emotions, and the overall quality of daily experience. Planets flanking the Moon — supporting it from the front (2nd) or behind (12th) — strengthen and enrich its expression. A supported Moon creates a person who feels fundamentally resourced: emotionally, intellectually, and materially.

Sunapha in Detail

Sunapha forms when planets are in the 2nd house from the Moon. This directly supports the Moon's capacity to acquire and hold resources. Sunapha with Jupiter in the 2nd from Moon is especially powerful — associated with wealth, wisdom, and a natural authority. With Venus, it produces comfort and beauty. With Mercury, intelligence and communication gifts. With Mars, energy and enterprise. With Saturn, discipline and material solidity.

Anapha in Detail

Anapha forms when planets are in the 12th from the Moon. This speaks more to background support, hidden resources, and the quality of inner life. Anapha natives often have reserves that others don't see — resources that emerge in times of need. Jupiter in the 12th from Moon can indicate hidden spiritual wealth; Venus, appreciation for solitude and retreat.

Durudhara Yoga

When both Sunapha and Anapha are present simultaneously — planets on both sides of the Moon — the combination is called Durudhara Yoga. This is considered especially auspicious, indicating a person who is well-supported in all directions and tends to prosper throughout life.
