Vedic Astrology Yogas

Pancha Mahapurusha
Five Great Person Yogas

The Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas are five distinct planetary combinations, each formed when one of the five non-luminary planets is strong in a specific position — producing a person of exceptional quality in that planet's domain.

What Are the Pancha Mahapurusha Yogas?

Pancha means "five," Maha means "great," Purusha means "person" — these are the five combinations that produce a great human being in a specific domain. Each yoga is formed when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn occupies its own sign or exaltation sign AND is placed in a Kendra (angular house: 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th) from the Lagna or Moon.

Ruchaka Yoga — Mars

Formed when Mars is in Aries, Scorpio (own signs), or Capricorn (exaltation) in a Kendra. Produces a person with exceptional physical courage, leadership in conflict, military or athletic prowess, and strong willpower. Ruchaka natives often have commanding physical presence and excel where direct action is required.

Bhadra Yoga — Mercury

Formed when Mercury is in Gemini or Virgo (own signs, both also exaltation) in a Kendra. Produces a person of exceptional intelligence, communicative skill, commercial acumen, and analytical ability. Bhadra natives tend toward intellectual careers — writing, teaching, law, finance, or technology.

Hamsa Yoga — Jupiter

Formed when Jupiter is in Sagittarius, Pisces (own signs), or Cancer (exaltation) in a Kendra. Produces a person of wisdom, generosity, spiritual grace, and ethical authority. Hamsa (swan) natives often become teachers, judges, advisors, or spiritual leaders — people others naturally trust.

Malavya Yoga — Venus

Formed when Venus is in Taurus, Libra (own signs), or Pisces (exaltation) in a Kendra. Produces a person of refined beauty, artistic talent, sensual enjoyment, and the capacity for deep love. Malavya natives often find success in the arts, luxury industries, diplomacy, or any field where aesthetic sensitivity is an asset.

Shasha Yoga — Saturn

Formed when Saturn is in Capricorn, Aquarius (own signs), or Libra (exaltation) in a Kendra. Produces a person of exceptional discipline, organizational capacity, endurance, and the ability to lead large numbers of people. Shasha natives often rise to positions of institutional or political authority through sheer determination and consistency.

Strength and Purity

The strength of any Pancha Mahapurusha Yoga depends on how free the planet is from affliction. A yoga-forming planet that is also conjunct a malefic or heavily aspected by enemies will have its positive effects significantly reduced. The purest expression of these yogas comes when the planet is unafflicted, retrograde (in some interpretations), and the Lagna lord is also strong.
