Budha Aditya Yoga is formed when Mercury and the Sun are conjunct in the same sign. Because Mercury never travels more than 28 degrees from the Sun, this conjunction is extremely common — statistically, roughly one-third of all people have this yoga in their birth charts.
When well-formed (Mercury not combust, the conjunction in a favorable sign), Budha Aditya Yoga is associated with: intelligence and mental clarity, communication skills and eloquence, success through intellectual effort, a well-integrated sense of self-expression, and aptitude for writing, speaking, mathematics, or business.
The most important factor in evaluating Budha Aditya Yoga is whether Mercury is combust (within 14 degrees of the Sun). A combust Mercury has its independent expression absorbed by the Sun — which can reduce the yoga's positive effects. However, Mercury within 1 degree of the Sun (Cazimi) is actually considered very strong. Mercury between 1 and 14 degrees from the Sun is genuinely combust and the yoga is weakened. Mercury between 14 and 28 degrees from the Sun is safe from combustion and the yoga functions well.
The sign in which Budha Aditya falls significantly affects the yoga's quality. Mercury in Gemini or Virgo (its own signs) with the Sun creates a stronger yoga. Mercury exalted in Virgo with the Sun is especially powerful. Mercury in Pisces (debilitated) with the Sun creates a weaker version of the yoga.
When a third planet joins the Sun-Mercury conjunction, it modifies the yoga. Jupiter added creates a triple conjunction associated with wisdom and teaching. Venus added creates aesthetic and diplomatic intelligence. Saturn added can create a serious, disciplined mind but may slow communication.
