Transits (Gochara) refer to the current positions of planets in the sky and how they interact with the positions of planets in your birth chart. While the Dasha system provides the broad timing of life themes, transits add precision — helping identify specific windows when Dasha promises are most likely to manifest.
In Jyotish, transits are traditionally read from the natal Moon's position, not the Ascendant. The Moon sign (Janma Rashi) is the reference point. A planet transiting the 1st house from your Moon affects you personally and emotionally; a planet transiting the 10th house from your Moon affects career and public life.
Saturn's transit through the sign behind, the sign of, and the sign ahead of your natal Moon is called Sade Sati — the seven and a half year period. This is one of the most significant transit periods in Vedic astrology, associated with increased responsibility, difficulty, and ultimately profound growth and maturation. It occurs approximately every 29 years.
Jupiter transits are among the most auspicious in Jyotish. Jupiter changing signs (which it does approximately every year) often coincides with new opportunities, expansion of the life, and fortunate developments in the areas of the chart it activates. Jupiter's transit over the natal Moon, Ascendant, or Ascendant lord is often a time of notable good fortune.
The most powerful timing technique in Jyotish combines Dasha and transit analysis. When the Mahadasha planet is also activated by favorable transits — especially Jupiter's transit — the Dasha promises are most likely to manifest. Conversely, when Saturn transits difficult points during a challenging Dasha, the period can be especially testing.
