Vedic astrology uses several methods to assess relationship compatibility, from the traditional Ashtakoot system (Nakshatra matching) to full chart comparison (inter-chart aspects, house overlays, and Dasha timing). Each method reveals a different dimension of the relationship's potential.
The most traditional compatibility method in Jyotish is Ashtakoot — a system of eight categories (koot) that compare the Moon's Nakshatra placement in both charts. These eight categories are: Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakut, and Nadi. Each is assigned a point value; the maximum total is 36 points. A score above 18 is considered compatible.
When two charts are compared, each person's planets fall into different houses of the other's chart. This "house overlay" reveals how each person affects the other's life areas. A partner's Venus falling in your 1st house, for example, tends to increase attractiveness and personal warmth in the relationship. Their Saturn in your 7th house may introduce structure — or restriction — into the partnership.
In Jyotish, planets aspect each other across charts — creating connections, tensions, and activations between the two people's energies. Particularly significant are aspects involving the Sun, Moon, Venus, Mars, and the Lagna lord of each chart.
The 7th house, its lord, and any planets within it describe what a person seeks in a partner and the general quality of their significant relationships. In synastry, when one person's important planets activate the other's 7th house, the relationship tends to feel fated or magnetic.
In Jyotish, the timing of when a relationship becomes significant is often indicated by the Dasha of a planet connected to the 7th house. Even a highly compatible synastry may not manifest a committed relationship until the relevant Dasha period is active.
