Retrograde motion is an optical illusion created by the relative speeds of Earth and other planets in their orbits. When a planet appears to move backward through the zodiac from our perspective on Earth, it is said to be retrograde (Vakri in Sanskrit). The Sun and Moon never go retrograde. Rahu and Ketu are always retrograde by definition.
A planet that was retrograde at birth carries a distinctive quality in the natal chart. Classical Jyotish texts suggest that retrograde planets gain strength — sometimes exceptional strength — but express their significations in an internalized, non-conventional, or delayed manner. A retrograde planet may deliver its results later in life, or through unusual circumstances.
Retrograde Mercury: A deeply introspective mind that may process information differently from others. Often highly creative and unconventional in thinking. May struggle with linear communication but excel in lateral and associative thought. Retrograde Venus: Deeply internalized values around love and beauty. May have complex or karmic relationship patterns, often tied to past-life connections. Retrograde Mars: Internalized drive that can build to great intensity. May act in bursts after long periods of restraint. Retrograde Jupiter: Wisdom that comes from within rather than from teachers or tradition. May question or reject conventional wisdom before arriving at deeper understanding. Retrograde Saturn: Karma from past lives is particularly active. Deep work around discipline, responsibility, and authority. Often indicates someone who must find their own approach to the themes Saturn governs.
When a planet turns retrograde by transit over a sensitive point in the natal chart, it often brings a revisiting of themes associated with that point. Things begun during a retrograde transit may need to be reconsidered or redone. Retrograde Mercury transits are famous for communication mishaps; retrograde Venus for the return of old relationship themes.
