The Nine Navagrahas
Planets of Vedic Astrology

In Jyotish, nine planets (Navagrahas) are used — the seven classical planets plus the lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Each is a distinct cosmic intelligence with its own domain of life.

Why Nine Planets?

Vedic astrology uses nine grahas (literally "seizers" — forces that grip and influence consciousness). Unlike Western astrology, Jyotish does not use Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto as primary chart factors. Instead, it elevates Rahu and Ketu — the Moon's North and South Nodes — to full planetary status, recognizing them as powerful karmic forces.

The Sun — Surya

The Sun represents the soul (Atma), father, authority, government, health, and the capacity for self-expression. It rules Leo. The Sun is exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra. A strong Sun gives confidence, leadership, and vitality. A weak or afflicted Sun can create issues with authority, ego, or health.

The Moon — Chandra

The Moon represents the mind (Manas), mother, emotions, intuition, and the flow of life. It rules Cancer. Exalted in Taurus, debilitated in Scorpio. The Moon is the fastest-moving graha and the most sensitive indicator of daily life experience. In Jyotish, the Moon is often considered even more important than the Sun.

Mars — Mangal

Mars represents energy, courage, ambition, siblings, land, and the capacity for action. It rules Aries and Scorpio. Exalted in Capricorn, debilitated in Cancer. Mars gives drive and determination; afflicted Mars brings conflict, accidents, or rash behavior.

Mercury — Budha

Mercury represents intelligence, communication, commerce, and skill. It rules Gemini and Virgo. Exalted in Virgo, debilitated in Pisces. Mercury is the planet of the student and the merchant — quick, adaptable, and endlessly curious.

Jupiter — Guru

Jupiter represents wisdom, dharma, wealth, children, and the teacher. It rules Sagittarius and Pisces. Exalted in Cancer, debilitated in Capricorn. Jupiter is the most benefic planet in Jyotish — its presence in a house expands and blesses that area of life.

Venus — Shukra

Venus represents love, beauty, luxury, relationships, and the arts. It rules Taurus and Libra. Exalted in Pisces, debilitated in Virgo. Venus governs the pleasures of earthly life and the quality of intimate relationships.

Saturn — Shani

Saturn represents karma, discipline, delay, longevity, and the working class. It rules Capricorn and Aquarius. Exalted in Libra, debilitated in Aries. Saturn is the great teacher — slow, serious, and ultimately just. Its transits and Dasha periods are among the most significant of any planetary influence.

Rahu — The North Node

Rahu has no physical body — it is a mathematical point where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic. In Jyotish, Rahu represents obsession, worldly desire, foreign things, and the karma we are here to accumulate in this lifetime. It amplifies and distorts whatever it touches.

Ketu — The South Node

Ketu, opposite Rahu, represents liberation, past-life karma, spirituality, and the things we are releasing in this lifetime. It gives intense focus and sometimes psychic ability, but also detachment — even from things that seem very important.
