What is Lagna?
The Ascendant in Jyotish

The Lagna — your rising sign at the moment of birth — is not just one placement among many. It is the lens through which your entire chart is read.

What is Lagna?

Lagna (also called the Ascendant or Rising Sign) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment and location of your birth. In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the Lagna is considered the most important single factor in the birth chart — more important, in many ways, than even the Sun sign.

The Lagna changes approximately every two hours, which is why the exact birth time is so critical in Jyotish. Two people born on the same day can have completely different Lagnas — and therefore completely different chart structures — if they were born even a few hours apart.

Why Lagna Matters More Than Sun Sign

In Western astrology, the Sun sign dominates. In Jyotish, the Lagna governs the chart. The ruling planet of your Lagna (called the Lagna Lord or Chart Ruler) becomes your most important planet — its placement in your chart shapes your overall life direction, health, and personality more than any other single factor.

The Lagna also determines the house structure of your chart. Each of the 12 houses represents a different area of life (wealth, relationships, career, spirituality), and the Lagna is the first house cusp — the starting point from which all other houses are counted.

Lagna and Physical Appearance

In Jyotish, the Lagna and any planets placed in the first house describe the physical body — its constitution, general health tendencies, and often the overall physical appearance. Planets near the Lagna degree have an especially strong influence on how a person carries themselves in the world.

The Lagna Lord

Every Lagna has a ruling planet. For Aries Lagna, it is Mars. For Taurus Lagna, Venus. For Gemini and Virgo, Mercury. For Cancer, the Moon. For Leo, the Sun. For Libra, Venus. For Scorpio, Mars. For Sagittarius and Pisces, Jupiter. For Capricorn and Aquarius, Saturn.

Wherever the Lagna Lord is placed in the chart — which house, which sign — that area of life receives special emphasis and becomes a major theme of the person's story.

Calculating Lagna Accurately

Because Lagna shifts every two hours, an accurate birth time is essential. A difference of even 15 minutes can shift the Lagna degree, potentially changing the entire house structure of the chart. If you don't know your exact birth time, a skilled astrologer can sometimes rectify the chart based on major life events.
