The 12 Bhavas
Houses of the Vedic Chart

The 12 houses divide life into 12 domains — from body and self to career, relationships, and liberation. Every planet in your chart occupies a house, and that house becomes the arena where the planet's energy plays out.

How Houses Work in Jyotish

In Vedic astrology, the Lagna (Rising Sign) forms the cusp of the 1st house. Each subsequent sign becomes the next house, counting counter-clockwise around the chart. The sign on each house cusp shapes that house's energy, and any planets within a house activate that life area.

The Four House Types

Houses are grouped into four types: Kendra (angular: 1, 4, 7, 10 — power houses), Trikona (trine: 1, 5, 9 — fortune and dharma), Upachaya (growth: 3, 6, 10, 11 — improving over time), and Dusthana (difficult: 6, 8, 12 — challenges and hidden things).
